Thomas Wilbur Homestead – 3188 Post Road, Warwick, RI 02886
The Thomas Wilbur Homestead is our next project in affordable housing development. This historic property, located at 3188 Post Road in the heart of Apponaug Village, is registered as the Thomas Wilbur House, a 1744 Baptist meeting house with a later addition dated around 1820. The property includes the main house, a carriage house, a barn, and several smaller outbuildings. The main house is currently occupied as the administrative offices and headquarters for House of Hope CDC.
House of Hope’s objective is to preserve and enhance the historic character of the property while creating five new units of affordable permanent supportive housing for disabled individuals (with or without families). Close in proximity to the project is Kent Hospital, Kent County Mental Health Services, and a host of other medical services that can be easily accessed by the residents.
The development will consist of both rehabilitation and new construction. There will be renovations to an existing building (the carriage house) that will contain two single bedroom units. New construction will include the creation of a multi-unit building containing three two-bedroom units. Each unit is designed with attention to detail, incorporating universal design with consideration to comfort, function, and potential disabilities—promoting longer retention and stability of residents. The lower level units will be retrofitted to include all necessary ADA adaptations.
